Often we have big dreams for tomorrow, dreams of the things we want to do in this world, of the people we will become. We may even have the aptitude and the skill. And yet somehow there seem to be periods where we make little progress. What happens? What gets in the way?

Almost all the time, the answer is our-selfwe get in the way.

And so we have a choice, we can create some kind of habit, or a routine, that will allow us to achieve the things we want most, or we can allow ourselves to get in the way of the things we want most.

Plato gives us counsel;

“The first and greatest victory is to conquer yourself; to be conquered by yourself is of all things most shameful and vile.”

Plato

Choosing a path to Victory.

I believe that a practice like choosing 3 Most Important Tasks (M.I.T.s), if done daily, is simultaneously a cause and an outcome of the Greatest Victory.

  • Think about what you want to achieve by the end of the year.
  • What does the half way point look like? Where would you need to be in 6 months if you are going to get to the finish line by the end of the year?
  • Break your 6 month halfway point down into time frames of 3 months each (quarterly goals) – things that need to get done to done to get you to the half way point.
  • Break each 3 month (quarterly) goal down into a monthly goal. What do you need to do this month to achieve your quarterly goal.
  • At the start of each week, look at your monthly goal, and decide what will get you closer to that – this is your focus for the week.
  • Each morning, look at your focus for the week and write down the 3 Most Important Tasks required to achieve your focus for the week.

By simply focusing on the most important thing each morning, you will accomplish that goal that seems so far away.

Choosing where we want to go and then breaking it down into manageable, important steps to be taken daily is a path that will allow us to conquer our distractions and accomplish anything we have set our mind to.

May we all achieve the greatest victories!
